AUC academics formed a Teaching and Learning Group to progress collaborative work in agricultural education.
Supported by the Aurora Trust and The Mark Leonard Trust, the AUC brought together leaders of nearly all UK agriculture degree programmes for a retreat in July 2023. They heard from from an array of speakers from industry, NGOs and policy as a fresh way to update their courses with the latest developments in agriculture for inspiring for the next generation of farmers and practitioners.
The AUC have since teamed up to form a Teaching and Learning Group (T&L) to progress collaborative work in education. One priority from the retreat was to compare programme structures and modules across the sector.
Analysing taught modules across the AUC
We compared 278 modules across 10 AUC institutions to identify what topics are covered, and how they are being taught and assessed. For example, this work considers how the design and delivery of first year modules frame students' further learning and engagement.
The findings
A range of agricultural programmes are taught by AUC Universities, and include core pathways which focus on crops, livestock, agronomy and farm technology. Other pathways range from countryside management, food business management and ecosystem management.
The categories with the most modules across AUC Universities included agri-business management, animal and plant sciences and academic and industry skills. There were also a range of modules with a focus on environmental science, sustainability, social science and policy, and agri-tech. Explore the full details below.
